Cooling kW vs Electrical kW

The kW in this converter is cooling capacity. The electricity the unit draws is much lower: electrical kW = cooling kW ÷ COP. A 500 TR (1,758 kW) water-cooled chiller at 0.6 kW/TR draws about 300 kW of electricity, and a 1.5 TR split AC (5.3 kW cooling) with EER 10 draws about 1.8 kW.

EfficiencyMeaningConversion
kW/TRElectrical kW per ton of cooling (chillers)COP = 3.517 ÷ (kW/TR)
EERBtu/h of cooling per watt (unitary AC)COP = EER ÷ 3.412
COPCooling kW per electrical kWkW/TR = 3.517 ÷ COP

FAQ

How many kW is 1 ton of refrigeration?

1 TR = 3.517 kW of cooling, which is 12,000 Btu/h.

How do you convert kW to TR?

Divide kW by 3.517. For example, 100 kW ÷ 3.517 = 28.4 TR.

Why is it called a ton of refrigeration?

It is the cooling effect of melting one short ton (2,000 lb) of ice over 24 hours: 288,000 Btu ÷ 24 h = 12,000 Btu/h.

How many kW is a 1.5 ton AC?

1.5 TR = 5.28 kW of cooling. Its electrical input is lower, about 1.5–2 kW depending on efficiency.

What does kW/TR mean for a chiller?

It is the electrical power drawn per ton of cooling. Lower is better: modern water-cooled chillers reach about 0.5–0.6 kW/TR at full load.
